Last night I spoke to the White House and advocated for federal assistance for the counties affected by derecho. President Trump and Vice President Pence are closely monitoring the situation. I understand that there are several national political stories at play right now; however, it is not possible to overstate the extreme devastation and tragedy Iowans are facing right now. Our communities have been uprooted, our streets are barricaded by downed power lines and trees, and our families are still without power. Cedar Rapids, Marion, and cities across Iowa are suffering, and it’s abundantly clear that now is not the time for politics.
In 2008, I covered the devastating floods on the air for KCRG-TV9. While different, the damage from the storms this week is equally enormous. Iowa came back strong before, and I know it will again. Now, more than ever, we need help. I trust the administration and Governor Reynolds to lead this effort and get the job done. Please continue praying for the first responders and workers who are on the ground helping to get our communities back on their feet. I will continue to share updates as I get them.
